Do I Need a Bushfire Attack Level (BAL) Assessment?

You only need a BAL assessment if your property is located within a Bushfire Prone Area as designated by the DFES Commissioner. These areas are shown on the Bushfire Prone Map, which identifies all land in Western Australia subject to additional planning and construction requirements aimed at improving bushfire resilience.

To check whether your property falls within a bushfire-prone area, use the interactive map linked below. Simply enter your property address in the search bar (top left of the map). If your site appears shaded pink, it is considered bushfire prone, and a BAL or BMP assessment will be required for new development or significant modifications.

Some important clarifications:

  • If your proposed building is entirely outside the pink-shaded area, even if another part of the lot is affected, a BAL assessment is generally not required.

  • If no planning approval is required and the development falls outside the bushfire-prone area, bushfire construction provisions do not apply.
